."Your
Central
Texas News Leader" - LIN Television co-owns KNVA
54, Austin's WB. |
KXAN has had its share of
firsts in Austin. It was the first station in Austin to have
hourly news updates. Though not live, this gave Channel 36 the
license to call itself "Your 24-Hour News Service"
in the late '80s and early '90s.
36 has also proclaimed itself the first
station in Austin to provide "Next-Generation"
weather technology, with its Live and Dual Dopplers, Live
WeatherNet and |

technologies. Speaking of tech- |

Statistics: |
nology,
KXAN was indeed the first station in Austin to go digital; in
2000, KXAN-HD 21 went on the air.
KXAN has had
two prior names in its forty-plus year history; KTTV and KHFI,
making it the most-renamed TV station in Central Texas.
During the
kafuffle that was the KEYE/KTBC affiliation switch in 1995,
KXAN gained viewers and (perhaps) a sense of
self-righteousness when it played its "We're Not
Switching" ad campaign. |
*KXAN
began operation
as an
NBC affiliate on October 15, 1987. |
*From
1973 to
1987, Channel
36 was known as KTVV. Before that, it was KHFI, Channel
42 (now home to CBS' KEYE.) |
*KHFI
was the
call
symbols for a radio station in Austin, before its name
changed to KISS-FM in 2002. |
*Would
you like to see the KTVV logo from 1973? We
have it! (Thanks
to Logoland for the image!) (It's from a 1973 TV
Guide ad.) |

The public has had great
admiration and respect for News 36, and its trusted,
award-winning news and weather teams. Winner of many
Associated Press awards, including many consecutive Best
Newscast in Texas awards, KXAN's fans have awarded the station
with the most viewers. In fact, viewers' opinions have been so
well-undertaken, that in the late '90s when anchor Robert
Hadlock was demoted to field reporter, a huge complaint arose
from his 'fan base,' causing Hadlock to return to the anchor
desk less than two months later. |
