."Your
Eye on Austin" |
In March of 1995, Austin's
Fox 42, KBVO, aired a commercial that was to alter the face of
Austin-Area news forever. Against images of the Austin skyline
during the daybreak hours, the rising sun turned into a black
CBS Eye moniker. The Eye then fell into place between the
station's new name and logo: K-EYE.
Management at that time spent a
speculative amount (perhaps millions of dollars) filming CBS

Fox to CBS. |

K-EYEwitness
News debuted July 2 at 5:00pm, with a half-hour special
hosted by then-weekday anchors Neal Spelce and Terri Chappell
(who now works for WB 33 in Dallas). The special explained to
a very confused Central Texas area what programs would be
found on KEYE, and which ones would not. They offered a
toll-free hotline for viewers to call in and leave comments or
ask questions.
KEYE's news
program differed from the other three
stations in that their
presentation was more "visual." Reporters and
in-studio anchors would often report stories in front of what
the Austin American-Statesman dubbed a "dark,
looming video wall." The anchors would hold up props from
time to time.
Beginning with the sale of KEYE to CBS
Mass Media in 1999, radical changes began to develop, starting
with the releasing of many anchors and reporters, followed by

dropping of the "witness" and "opener"
(for morning news) labels, instead calling the program "KEYE
News."
In late spring 2001, KEYE changed its
logo to the current one, updating graphics and its newsroom,
color-coordinating in blues and removing the once-popular
"Cityscape" backdrop from the set. Later in the
year, their news chopper, "SkyEYE" was retired, and
a long set of anchor and reporter changes occurred, a process
which is not yet settled.
Currently, KEYE News' ratings are not
the best; in fact the noon news was dropped in late 2002 due
to this fact. KEYE's new general manager and news director are
trying their darndest to make sure KEYE News is worth
watching. Their main move is to hire away popular anchors from
other stations. Fred Cantú, who co-anchored KVUE's Daybreak,
was hired to anchor the reformatted morning news. He was later
promoted to 6 and 10pm anchor New Year's week 2003. Recently,
KXAS (Dallas) anchor Jeff Eliasoph was hired to co-anchor the
5pm newscast. And KEYE has scored another famous KVUE
employee: Judy Maggio. Maggio is now officially a KEYE
employee, working as managing editor of the newscasts; in
October 2003, she will co-anchor with Mr. Cantú for the 6 and
10 reports. |
